Bird Island

Just three degrees south of the equator, tiny Bird Island boasts five kilometres of soft white-sand beaches and just 24 cottages hidden among its coconut palms.  These trees are the remains of the island’s plantation, providing a shady respite alongside these comfortable eco-lodges.  This is island living at its most escapist – surrounded by crystal clear waters, you can pass many pleasurable hours snorkelling amongst the coral reefs besides colourful fish. Laze on the pristine white sands and you might find yourself joined by a turtle, keen to soak up the golden sunshine alongside you.  As well as being home to tropical birds, you may also encounter giant land tortoises on this tiny Indian Ocean island – what Bird Island might lack in size or resort facilities, it more than makes up for in the diverse flora and fauna that call it home.  A light aircraft will transfer you the 65 miles from the main island, Mahe, in just half an hour – for a true get-away-from-it-all feel.
